Editor's note
Hello and welcome to the inaugural issue of Say It In Color!
This magazine was born out of frustration. Let me explain: I turned on the T.V and not a single reporter, sports player, or even cartoon character, resembled me. I watched a movie, and every actor was white; the only people of color jammed in as disposable side characters for 'diversity points'. I witnessed the Black Lives Matter movement rise up, the peaceful protests repainted as violent riots by so many news outlets. Sound familiar? My outrage was shared by other creatives and channeled into the art within these pages. In this issue, you will delve into the voices of young black poets challenging the status quo in this time of social revolution. You will witness the unapologetic proclamations of self-love; will celebrate the "dusky glory" of melanin-tinted skin. You will explore the constant battles of BIPOC people against colorism, racial discrimination, and issues faced back at home. Underlying it all is a sense of pride. People of color deserve to dream, to be loved, to exist. It's about time we started saying it. - Jhermayne |
